This is my first experience with the Call of Duty franchise, and well, it's a good one. Hard to fault it - it's a really great game. The online game may mean dealing with whining children and overly competitive jerks but it is still endless fun that changes all the time and can be played in short bursts or big sessions. The game is impressive but a bit short and without a huge amount in regards challenges to keep it fresh in the long-term. COD4 is roundly awesome even if all bits have strengths and weaknesses. For me level 55 is enough since it allows me to work on the challenges, keep all my perks etc and just focus on enjoying the game - there is little reason to go on apart from impressing others (hence it called prestige). As well as it being fun, the points system also allows you to have a "reason" to keep going and "prestiging" if you wish. All of these things are frustrating when you get done by them but it is part of the game and the challenge is to get around them not start sulking. I can understand those that moan about the online behaviour of others in regards idiots who sing down the mic or trash-talk, but the game allows you to mute them (and I do) but I don't get the moaning about campers, snipers, those who use the M16, those who get lucky with grenades etc. In this area, COD4 is near perfect because it is a great game to drop in, play a game and then get on with something else, but it is also the sort of thing that you can play for whole days if the mood takes you. However with time you can easily get to a reasonable level of playing - you'll always get those who take it really seriously but for me I was soon at a level where I felt I was doing as well as I would expect and occasionally doing better and, like everything, gradually improving my game with experience. It does annoy a little to be ripped to bits by those who spend their lives inside this world but to be honest that can happen no matter how good you are. It was a week or so before I really got into this and at first it is a frustrating experience because, no matter what the publicity says, you will never find yourself in a game with lots of other new players in the "family" zone - even if that's what you are. Within the levels there are things to collect like laptops to get various fun things and there are also arcade settings where you play for points but ultimately the main reason, two months later, why this game remains a mainstay with me is the online experience.

It almost goes without saying that the game looks amazing and that HD is a must. I'll be honest and say that the hardest level (where basically one good hit kills you) is too much like hard work for me but otherwise I thought the curve was good. The difficulty levels change the game from being one where you can "run and gun" to much more challenging where you have to be careful.

I'm not sure how to avoid this though and I didn't see it as a problem because I didn't see it as "finished". Like everyone has said, it is easy to pick it up on the easy level and pretty much "finish" the game in a few days of broken play. Everyone will have their favourite but there are not really any "bad" levels - although the section in a jeep in the final level is not that great. I'm still not that good with it but that is me not the game! The plot of the game is solid and provides a good range of levels - from stealthy ones to full-on blazing battles. It says a lot about the control system then that within a few hours I was relatively fluid with it and it was no time at all that it all made sense and felt natural. Having been out of practice for some years I struggled with the controller and the first "mission" of trying to shoot targets or move round the wooden range was a painful affair.

However a few months ago I finally decided to buy an Xbox 360 and specifically this game because I enjoy first-person shooters that are not all about mowing down endless floods of zombies etc.

It has been about a decade since I last owned a console - the N64 it was - and adulthood forced me to stop buying them as I struggled to stop them dominating my time at the cost of other things. The Middle East is thrown into disarray by a high profile and very public assassination and US troops find themselves in an intense battle to recover nuclear weapons before they can be used, while British forces in Russia race to uncover information about the terrorist leaders. In the very near future, the world is engaging in the ongoing fight against terrorism, which involves full-scale battle operations and proactive missions to target key individuals.
